SQA Higher Photography Practice Exam

Proportion in photography refers to the relationship between elements in an image and how they relate to each other in size, scale, and placement within the composition. By manipulating proportion effectively, photographers can create visual illusions of size differences, making subjects appear larger or smaller in relation to their surroundings. This technique can enhance the storytelling aspect of an image, draw attention to a particular subject, or create dynamic tensions within the frame. For instance, when a small object is placed next to a larger one, the viewer perceives the relative sizes more dramatically, which can evoke a sense of scale and context. By using proportion strategically, photographers can guide the viewer’s gaze, influence emotional responses, and emphasize particular elements in their work. The other choices, while important aspects of photography, do not directly relate to the concept of proportion. Brightness in colors, detail in backgrounds, and contrast are influenced by different photographic techniques such as exposure, focus, and lighting rather than the relational sizes of elements in a composition.
