Florida Learner's Permit Practice Test

What should you do when approaching an intersection with a flashing red traffic light?

Come to a complete stop and proceed when it is safe. Slow down and proceed with caution. Treat it as a yield sign and proceed without stopping. Stop only if there are other vehicles at the intersection.

Correct Answer:

Come to a complete stop and proceed when it is safe.

Explanation:

Approaching an intersection with a flashing red traffic light means that the traffic signal is temporarily out of order, and it is important to proceed with caution. Option B may seem like a reasonable choice, but it is important to come to a complete stop at this type of intersection to ensure safety for yourself and other drivers. Option C is incorrect because treating a flashing red light as a yield sign and not stopping is not a safe or legal option. Option D is incorrect because stopping only if there are other vehicles at the intersection does not guarantee your safety and goes against the purpose of a flashing red light. It is important to always come to a complete stop and wait until it is safe to proceed at a flashing red traffic light.
