Vital capacity refers to the maximum amount of air a person can expel from the lungs after taking the deepest breath possible. As individuals age, various physiological changes naturally occur, including a decline in respiratory function. Research indicates that vital capacity can decline significantly—by approximately 40 percent—between the ages of 20 and 70 due to factors such as reduced elasticity of lung tissue, decreased muscle strength, and changes in chest wall structure. These changes can hinder the efficiency of breathing and overall lung function. Therefore, stating that vital capacity may decline by about 40 percent during this age range reflects an accurate understanding of aging and its effects on respiratory health. This understanding is important for trainers and health professionals working with seniors, as it highlights the necessity of tailored fitness plans that account for these physiological changes and promote respiratory health.
