Leading Marines Leadership Tools Practice Test

The type of counseling that is not established by Marine Corps policy is informal counseling. This category does not have a formalized structure or specific guidelines set forth by Marine Corps policy, which differentiates it from the other types. Directive counseling is clearly defined within Marine Corps policy and involves the counselor providing clear guidance and instructions to the counseled individual. Non-directive counseling, on the other hand, encourages the counseled to come to their own conclusions and solutions without direct influence from the counselor, and it is also recognized within the Marine Corps framework. Collaborative counseling combines aspects of both directive and non-directive counseling and adheres to established protocols, making it a recognized method as well. In contrast, informal counseling tends to happen outside of structured guidelines and is often situational or spontaneous, lacking the formal recognition and procedures that the Marine Corps sets for the other types. Thus, informal counseling does not have the same level of policy backing that is associated with the other forms of counseling.
