New Jersey Cosmetology & Hairstyling Practice Exam

The first step in a chemical hair relaxing treatment is analyzing the hair's condition. This crucial initial step involves assessing the hair's texture, porosity, elasticity, and overall health to determine its suitability for the relaxing process. By understanding the specific characteristics of the hair, the stylist can make informed decisions regarding the type of relaxer to use, the processing time required, and the overall approach to achieve the desired results without causing damage. This analysis helps to identify any potential issues, such as previous chemical treatments or any damage that could affect the relaxation process. It's essential to ensure the hair is in the right condition to withstand the harsh chemicals involved in relaxing before proceeding with any further steps, such as applying the relaxer or sectioning the hair for application. In contrast, options like rinsing the hair or applying the relaxer come after the initial assessment, as they are contingent on the findings from the hair analysis. Similarly, sectioning the hair is a preparatory step that would follow the analysis to ensure an even application of the relaxer but cannot precede the vital evaluation of the hair's condition.
