NICET Level 1 Water Based Systems Practice Exam

The size requirements for the suction and discharge pipe of a fire pump are critical in ensuring the pump operates efficiently and effectively. For a fire pump rated at 1000 gallons per minute (gpm), standard sizing guidelines are established to optimize flow and reduce friction losses in the system. The correct choice indicates that the suction pipe should be 8 inches in diameter and the discharge pipe should be 6 inches in diameter. An 8-inch suction line is necessary for a 1000 gpm fire pump to allow for adequate water volume and prevent cavitation, which can occur if the suction line is too small and restricts flow. This size helps facilitate the necessary water supply without excessive pressure drop. The 6-inch discharge pipe is appropriate for a 1000 gpm output because it allows for the efficient conveyance of water under pressure to the distribution system while still being manageable for installation and fitting with existing infrastructure. Choosing the correct sizes in this manner not only meets the hydraulic requirements of the fire suppression system but also complies with industry standards, ensuring safety and reliability in fire protection applications.
