TSFA Floral Certification – Floral Design Practice Test

Proper hydration and nutrition are essential for extending the vase life of cut flowers because they directly impact the flowers' ability to absorb water and essential nutrients during their time out of the soil. When cut flowers are placed in water, they require not just hydration to maintain turgidity but also nutrients to prevent wilting and promote long-lasting beauty. Nutritional solutions often contain sugars, biocides, and acids that help flowers remain fresh while minimizing microbial growth in the water. The process begins with proper conditioning, which involves cutting the stems at an angle under water to prevent air embolism and to provide a larger surface area for water uptake. Additionally, adding a flower preservative to the water can help support the flowers' needs, further enhancing their longevity. Without adequate hydration and nutritional support, flowers can quickly deteriorate, leading to a much shorter vase life. Other factors, such as removing leaves from stems and dry packing, are relevant considerations in floral care but do not directly address the fundamental needs of hydration and nutrition, which are critical for sustaining cut flowers’ health. Using decorative vases may enhance the aesthetic appeal but does not contribute significantly to prolonging the lifespan of the flowers themselves.
