Rattler Battalion Leadership Education And Training (LET) I Promotion Practice Test

What is the rank of the Battalion XO?

Major Captain Lieutenant Colonel Colonel

Correct Answer:

Major

Explanation:

In a battalion’s leadership, the executive officer serves as the second-in-command to the Battalion Commander, who is typically a Lieutenant Colonel. This places the XO at a senior, but not the top, level of authority, responsible for overseeing the staff, operations, and training and standing in for the commander when needed. A Major fits this role because it provides the right balance of leadership experience and authority to manage the battalion’s complex staff functions and daily operations. A Captain usually commands a company, a Lieutenant Colonel leads the battalion, and a Colonel operates at higher echelons such as brigades, so they wouldn’t be the XO. Therefore, the Battalion XO is a Major.
