NCHSE Standard 10 Technical Skills Practice Test

When addressing a bleeding wound, the most critical action is to apply pressure with the bandage to help stop the bleeding. By pressing the bandage firmly onto the wound, you create direct pressure that aids in clot formation and minimizes blood loss. This technique is vital in first aid, as uncontrolled bleeding can quickly lead to shock or other serious complications. In contrast, frequently removing the bandage to check for bleeding could disrupt any developing clots and cause the bleeding to resume or worsen. Similarly, wrapping the bandage loosely might allow air to reach the wound, which could lead to infection and further complications. Lastly, using SAMPLEa wet cloth instead of a bandage is not advisable because wet materials may not provide adequate pressure and could promote infection, especially if the cloth is not sterile. Thus, firm pressure with a bandage is the most effective way to manage a bleeding wound.
