ETA International Fiber Optics Installer Certification Practice Test

The performance of a fiber optic cable can be significantly influenced by various factors, and the correct choice encompasses key elements that directly affect signal transmission and overall functionality. Bend radius is crucial because exceeding it can lead to increased loss of signal strength or even total failure of the connection. Fiber optic cables have a specified minimum bend radius; if the cable is bent beyond this limit, it may lead to micro-bends or macro-bends, which disrupt the light transmission through the fiber. Temperature also plays a vital role in fiber optic performance. Extreme temperatures can affect the physical properties of the materials used in the fiber and connectors, potentially leading to expansion or contraction that may change the light path or increase attenuation. Environmental factors can also affect the integrity of the cable jacket, which protects the fiber inside. Physical stress is another important factor. This includes tensile stress from pulling during installation or installed conditions and impacts caused by weight or pressure on the cable. Physical stress can lead to fractures or micro-cracks within the fiber, contributing to increased signal loss and reduced performance. While the other choices include valid considerations, they do not encompass the primary factors that have a direct impact on the performance of fiber optic cables in the same comprehensive manner as the correct option.
