Board Certified Registered Art Therapist (ATR-BC) Practice Exam

The directive to use client scribbles to reveal cognitive functioning comes from the Ulman Personality Assessment Procedure. In this assessment, clients are given tasks that involve free-form scribbling and drawing, and the examiner analyzes how the person organizes and regulates their motor and cognitive processes—things like planning, sequencing, symmetry, persistence, and overall organization. This approach uses the scribble output as a window into cognitive functioning and ego functioning. Other tests focus on different purposes: the Draw-A-Person Test looks at emotional and developmental indicators through drawing a person, the Bender Visual-Motor Gestalt Test assesses visual-motor integration by copying geometric designs, and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory is a standardized self-report measure. None of these rely on a directive that elicits cognitive functioning specifically through client scribbles, making the Ulman Personality Assessment Procedure the best fit for this item.
