Exam Format and Passing Score

- Passing
Score: The SSAT is not graded on a traditional "pass/fail"

student's performance against their peers. While there is no definitive
passing score, highly competitive independent schools typically seek
applicants scoring in the 70th to 90th percentile or higher.

The Reading Comprehension section does not test outside
background knowledge; it rigorously evaluates how effectively a student can
interpret, dissect, and analyze provided texts. Passages cover diverse
genres—including literary fiction, humanities, science, and social studies—and
primarily test the following core skills:

and primary goal (e.g., to persuade, inform, entertain, or critique).
- Argument
Evaluation: Understanding how an author structures their arguments and
successfully supports their claims.
