Exam Format and Passing Score
Pacing and strategy are key to conquering the SSAT Math
sections (officially termed Quantitative Reasoning). For the Middle and
Upper-Level exams (grades 5–11), the structure is as follows:
- Number
of Questions: 50 multiple-choice questions, divided into two separate
sections of 25 questions each. (Note: The Elementary Level test
features a single 30-question math section).
- Time
Limit: 60 minutes total (30 minutes per section) for Middle and Upper
levels, giving you roughly 72 seconds per question.
- Passing
Score: There is no official "passing score" for the SSAT.
Because it is an academic admissions test, scores are presented as scaled
numbers and percentiles comparing a student to peers in the same grade.
Each independent school sets its own baseline requirements, so the goal is
to maximize your percentile rank rather than cross a generic pass/fail
threshold.

The SSAT Mathematics test evaluates how well you apply
foundational math concepts to solve complex, logical problems without the use
of a calculator. The primary subjects tested include:
