What is the Exam?
The UGC NET (University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test) is a prestigious national-level examination in India. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) to determine the eligibility of candidates for the positions of Assistant Professor and/or the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Indian universities and colleges. This exam is a critical benchmark for academics and researchers, ensuring that candidates possess the necessary teaching and research aptitude to contribute to the higher education sector.
Exam Format and Passing Score
The UGC NET is a Computer-Based Test (CBT) consisting of two objective-type papers taken in a single, continuous 3-hour session without breaks.
Total Questions: 150 (50 in Paper 1; 100 in Paper 2).
Total Marks: 300 (100 for Paper 1; 200 for Paper 2).
Time Limit: 180 minutes (3 hours).
Marking Scheme: 2 marks for every correct answer; no negative marking for incorrect answers.
Passing Score: To qualify, candidates must reach a minimum aggregate:
General (UR): 40% (Minimum 120/300 marks).
Reserved Categories (OBC-NCL/EWS/SC/ST/PwD): 35% (Minimum 105/300 marks).
Note: Qualifying marks are the minimum threshold; actual cutoffs for JRF or Assistant Professor positions are higher and determined based on subject-wise performance.
