About the Profession & Course
What is the Exam?
The NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses) is the gold-standard examination used to determine if a candidate has the entry-level competence required to practice as a safe and effective registered nurse.
Administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), this exam is a critical requirement for nursing licensure in the United States, Canada, and Australia. It is not merely a test of academic knowledge; it evaluates a candidate's ability to apply nursing concepts, think critically, and make sound clinical judgments in real-world patient care scenarios. Passing the NCLEX-RN is the final gatekeeping step that bridges the gap between nursing school graduate and a licensed, practicing professional.
Exam Format and Passing Score
The NCLEX-RN utilizes Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT), meaning the difficulty of each question adjusts based on your previous answers. This ensures an accurate measurement of your clinical ability.
Question Count: Between 85 and 150 questions. The exam stops when the algorithm is 95% confident of your competency (pass or fail) or when the maximum time/question limit is reached.
Time Limit: You are allowed a maximum of 5 hours to complete the exam, which includes all breaks and introductory instructions.
Passing Standard: There is no traditional "percentage" required to pass. Instead, you must meet a logit-based passing standard (currently set at 0.00 logits). You pass if the exam determines with 95?rtainty that your ability is above this threshold.
Core Exam Topics / Categories
The exam is structured around the "Client Needs" framework, designed to ensure nurses can provide holistic and safe care. The primary content areas are:
