About the Profession & Course

What is the Exam?

The NCLEX-PN (National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses) is the standardized national exam required to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) in the United States.

Administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), this exam is designed to determine if a candidate has the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities to practice safely and effectively as an entry-level nurse. Successfully passing the NCLEX-PN is the final, critical hurdle for nursing graduates seeking professional licensure to protect the public and provide high-quality healthcare.

Exam Format and Passing Score

The NCLEX-PN utilizes Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT), meaning the exam dynamically adjusts the difficulty of questions based on your performance to accurately gauge your competency.

  • Total Questions: You will face a minimum of 70 questions and a maximum of 135 questions. This total includes 15 experimental (unscored) items.

  • Time Limit: Candidates are allowed a maximum of 5 hours to complete the exam, which includes all breaks and introductory tutorials.

  • Passing Standard: The NCLEX-PN is a Pass/Fail exam. There is no numerical percentage score. You pass when the testing system is 95% confident that your ability level is above the established passing standard (a logit of -0.18).
