Administered by the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCNCB), this certification is designed for dedicated nursing professionals who seek to elevate their clinical practice, improve patient outcomes, and become recognized leaders in their facility.

By obtaining CWON certification, you prove your competence in assessing complex scenarios, designing effective intervention plans, and providing essential education to patients navigating life-changing conditions. About this Quiz

What the Course Entails and Exam Details

Preparing for the CWON exam means masterfully blending specialized education with hands-on clinical understanding. To obtain the full CWON credential, candidates must successfully pass two separate specialty exams: the Certified Wound Care Nurse (CWCN®) exam and the Certified Ostomy Care Nurse (COCN®) exam.

The prerequisite path generally requires a current, unrestricted RN license, a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in any field, and completion of a WOC Nursing Education Program accredited by the WOCN® Society, or meeting equivalent experiential and continuing education requirements.

The scope of knowledge tested across these two exams is comprehensive, focusing on three major domains:

Wound Care Specialty Domains:

  1. Assessment and Care Planning (35.5%)
  2. Intervention and Treatment (40%)
  3. Education and Referral (24.5%)

Ostomy Care Specialty Domains:

  1. Assessment and Care Planning (32.7%)
  2. Intervention and Treatment (40%)
  3. Education and Referral (27.3%)

Key competencies within these domains include surgical indications, management of stomal and peristomal complications, patient medication management, pediatric and geriatric considerations, colostomy irrigation, and preoperative education.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The CWON exam process consists of two distinct computer-delivered examinations, each evaluating your specialized competence. Here is a breakdown of what to expect on test day:

  • Format: Each specialty test (Wound and Ostomy) is composed of 120 multiple-choice questions. Only 110 of these are scored; the remaining 10 are unscored pretest items used for future exam development.
  • Time Limit: Candidates are allowed 2 hours to complete each specialty exam. You have the flexibility to schedule both exams during a single four-hour appointment or break them into two separate testing sessions within your 12-month eligibility period (a surcharge may apply for separate sessions).
  • Question Types: The questions are structured to test different levels of cognitive skill: Recall (25%), Application (61%), and Analysis (14%).
  • Passing Score: The WOCNCB uses a scaled scoring method. While your raw score is based on correct answers, the final result is reported on a scale ranging from 200 to 800. The minimum scaled score required to pass is 500.
  • Results: Official results are provided immediately upon completion of the computer-based test at the testing center.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Success on the CWON exams requires a strategic and consistent study plan. We recommend prioritizing the official resources provided by the certifying board.

Actionable Study Strategies:

  • Analyze the Content Outline: Start by thoroughly reviewing the detailed content outlines in the WOCNCB Candidate Handbook. This is the blueprint for the entire exam. Focus your study time proportionally on the largest domains (such as Intervention and Treatment).
  • Understand the "Why": Move beyond simple memorization. The exam tests your ability to analyze scenarios and apply pathophysiology to nursing actions. Ask yourself why a specific intervention is the best choice for a given patient's condition, age, and setting.
  • Utilize Official Tools: Leverage WOCNCB’s self-assessment exams, which are retired actual exams, and their flashcard mobile app. These tools provide the closest experience to the real test format.
  • Practice with Purpose: Don't just answer questions; analyze them. Identify the case scenario, the specific question being asked (the stem), and the distractors. When you answer incorrectly, understand why the correct choice was superior.
  • Consistency over Intensity: Frequent, shorter study sessions are more effective for long-term retention than sporadic "cramming."

Exam Centers and Registration:

Registration is conducted online through the WOCNCB website. Once your application is approved, you will receive eligibility notifications from the testing vendor, Scantron (now part of Meazure Learning).

  • Physical Testing Centers: You can take your proctored exams at any of the numerous Scantron/Meazure Learning testing centers located across the United States and internationally. Appointments are available primarily Monday through Friday.
  • Remote Proctoring: WOCNCB offers the convenience of Live Remote Proctoring (LRP). This allows you to take your exams 24/7 from the comfort of your home or office, provided you meet the technological requirements (desktop/laptop, webcam, microphone, and a secure internet connection).
