Description

The Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) designation is the premier national certification for professionals entering the high-demand field of surgical technology. Offered exclusively by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA), this credential demonstrates that a technician has met rigorous national standards of knowledge and skill. The CST is designed for graduates of accredited surgical technology programs who want to validate their competence to employers and patients. Earning this certification is a significant career milestone, as most healthcare facilities prefer or require CST certification for their surgical team members. A CST plays a critical role in the operating room, ensuring that surgical procedures are conducted under sterile conditions and that the sterile field is maintained throughout the operation.

About this Quiz

What the Course Entails and Exam Details

This comprehensive practice exam is meticulously designed to mirror the structure and complexity of the actual CST examination. The core content is based on the most recent NBSTSA exam blueprint, ensuring you are testing yourself on the material that matters most. The practice exam covers the three primary domains of knowledge essential for any starting surgical technologist. These domains include: Basic Science (covering Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, and Surgical Pharmacology); Perioperative Care (which includes Preoperative Preparation, Intraoperative Procedures, and Postoperative Procedures); and Ancillary Duties (focusing on Equipment Sterilization and Maintenance, and Administrative and Personnel duties). With dozens of varied, clinically focused multiple-choice questions, this practice tool allows you to identify your strengths and target your weakest areas for focused study.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The official NBSTSA CST exam is a rigorous, computer-based assessment. Candidates should expect a total of 175 multiple-choice questions, administered within a single, continuous four-hour testing window. It is important to note that of these 175 questions, only 150 are scored; the remaining 25 are unscored "pretest items" that are being evaluated for future exams. You will not know which questions are scored and which are not. To achieve a passing status, you must achieve a score of 98 or higher on the 150 scored questions. The exam is closed-book, and strict security protocols are followed at all times. Upon completing the exam, you will receive your score report almost immediately at the testing center.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Effective preparation for the CST requires a structured study plan that includes both content review and active practice. We highly recommend that candidates begin by thoroughly reviewing the official CST Examination Content Outline provided by the NBSTSA. Use your original program textbooks, official reference lists, and flashcards to master terminology and procedures. However, the most effective method for boosting your score and reducing anxiety is to take multiple full-length practice exams. Simulate the real testing experience by timing yourself and taking the practice tests in a quiet environment. Analyze your results after each attempt, specifically focusing on the rationales for questions you answered incorrectly. When you are ready to take the official CST exam, you must first apply to the NBSTSA and receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) letter. All CST exams are administered by appointment only through PSI Testing Centers, which has locations nationwide. Military applicants stationed overseas may have additional options through their base education center. Remember to arrive early with two valid forms of identification, one of which must include a current photograph and signature.

 Job Opportunities from the Course

Earning your CST certification dramatically expands your career opportunities within the surgical services field. It transforms you from an applicant into a recognized professional, often unlocking higher starting salaries and preferential hiring. Specialized career paths that become accessible to a CST include roles such as a Neurosurgical Technologist, working in high-pressure environments focused on the brain and spine. You could also pursue a career as a Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) Surgical Technologist, specializing in heart and vascular procedures. Other significant opportunities exist as an Orthopedic Surgical Technologist, an Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) Surgical Technologist, or a Urological Surgical Technologist. In addition to specializing, a CST can advance into supervisory roles, such as the manager of a Central Supply Department, or leverage their knowledge as a sales representative for surgical equipment firms. Ultimately, this certification serves as a foundational step toward further advancement, potentially leading to roles as a Surgical First Assistant or a Registered Nurse with specialized surgical training.
