 What to Expect in the Final Exam

The official NBSTSA CST exam is a rigorous, computer-based assessment. Candidates should expect a total of 175 multiple-choice questions, administered within a single, continuous four-hour testing window. It is important to note that of these 175 questions, only 150 are scored; the remaining 25 are unscored "pretest items" that are being evaluated for future exams. You will not know which questions are scored and which are not. To achieve a passing status, you must achieve a score of 98 or higher on the 150 scored questions. The exam is closed-book, and strict security protocols are followed at all times. Upon completing the exam, you will receive your score report almost immediately at the testing center.

When you are ready to take the official CST exam, you must first apply to the NBSTSA and receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) letter. All CST exams are administered by appointment only through PSI Testing Centers, which has locations nationwide. Military applicants stationed overseas may have additional options through their base education center. Remember to arrive early with two valid forms of identification, one of which must include a current photograph and signature.
