Description

The Board Certified Specialist in Renal Nutrition (CSR) credential is a premier certification for Registered Dietitians (RDs) who have demonstrated exceptional expertise in the specialized field of nephrology nutrition. This certification is awarded by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and serves as the definitive standard for practitioners caring for individuals with kidney disease. The CSR program is designed for experienced RDs who work across the spectrum of renal care, including those managing patients with Acute Kidney Injury (AKI), Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) stages 1 through 5, and individuals receiving renal replacement therapies such as hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and kidney transplantation. For dedicated dietitians, achieving the CSR credential validates their specialized knowledge, advanced clinical skills, and unwavering commitment to delivering optimal nutritional care to a complex and vulnerable patient population.

About this Quiz

What the Course Entails and Exam Details

The content of the CSR exam is derived from a rigorous practice analysis and is structured around the essential job functions of a renal nutrition specialist. The exam focuses on three primary domain areas: Nutrition Assessment and Diagnosis; Intervention and Care Coordination; and Quality Management and Evidence-Based Practice. Within these domains, candidates must display mastery in assessing and interpreting biochemical data, anthropometric measurements, nutrition-focused physical findings, and medical histories. They are tested on their ability to diagnose nutrition problems, establish etiologies, and identify signs and symptoms. Furthermore, the exam evaluates proficiency in developing and implementing individualized nutrition interventions, providing counseling, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams. Candidates must also demonstrate their understanding of quality improvement protocols (such as QAPI), regulatory guidelines (e.g., CMS), and their ability to apply current, evidence-based nutrition guidelines (like KDOQI and KDIGO) to patient care across the entire continuum of renal disease.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The Specialist in Renal Nutrition examination is a computer-based, standardized test. The current exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions. Within this total, there are approximately 130 scored questions and 20 pretest questions. The pretest questions are scattered throughout the exam and are not distinguishable from the scored items; they do not count toward your final score but are used to gather data for future exam development. Candidates are given a total of three hours (180 minutes) to complete the entire examination. A candidate’s final score is reported on a scale ranging from 25 to 75, and a minimum scaled score of 50 is required to pass the CSR exam. The questions include clinical scenario-based items and key feature questions designed to assess clinical judgment and the application of knowledge. There are strict rules governing the exam, and candidates must present proper identification at the testing center.

How to Study and Exam Centers

To succeed on the CSR exam, a candidate must have both strong clinical experience and a comprehensive, structured study plan. The core recommendation is to thoroughly review the standard reference texts used in the field, specifically the most recent editions of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Pocket Guide to Renal Nutrition and the National Kidney Foundation’s KDOQI Clinical Practice Guidelines. It is essential to practice with examination-style multiple-choice questions to familiarize yourself with the format and timing of the test. Utilizing practice exams will help identify weak areas that require additional focus. The Specialist in Renal Nutrition exam is administered exclusively through Pearson VUE professional testing centers located throughout the United States and Canada. After receiving an eligibility notification from the CDR, candidates can schedule their appointment at a time and testing location most convenient for them within the specific application and testing windows provided by the CDR.
