What the Course Entails and Exam Details

The CRNI® exam is designed to test a candidate's mastery of the core concepts, skills, and ethical considerations necessary for expert infusion nursing practice.

The core syllabus of the exam is divided into three primary content domains, which are weighted to reflect their importance in daily practice. These domains cover the entire lifecycle of infusion care:

• Principles of Practice: This domain focuses on the foundational elements of infusion therapy. Key topics include legal and ethical considerations, patient education, infection prevention and control, risk management, and the application of evidence-based Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice.
• Access Devices: This domain tests your comprehensive knowledge of vascular access devices. You must understand the selection, insertion, placement, care, maintenance, and potential complications associated with all types of access, including peripheral, midline, and central venous access devices (CVADs), as well as implanted ports.
• Infusion Therapies: This domain covers the wide array of therapies administered via infusion. Topics include the pharmacology of commonly infused medications, fluid and electrolyte balance, parenteral nutrition, transfusion medicine, antineoplastic and biologic therapies, and the management of therapeutic distinct populations, such as pediatric or geriatric patients.

This comprehensive curriculum ensures that a CRNI® possesses the advanced judgment and skills required to manage the complexities of modern infusion therapy across various healthcare settings.

 What to Expect in the Final Exam

The Certified Registered Nurse Infusion (CRNI®) final exam is a comprehensive assessment administered via a computer-based testing format. It is designed to be a challenging validation of your specialized expertise.

The exam consists of 140 multiple-choice questions. Of these, 120 are scored items used to determine your pass/fail status. The remaining 20 questions are unscored pretest items used for statistical validation of future exam versions; these unscored items are distributed throughout the exam and are not identified.

Candidates are allotted a total time limit of 2.5 hours (150 minutes) to complete the test. This requires maintaining a steady pace of approximately one minute per question. The exam is offered twice per year during specific testing windows in March and September.

The INCC utilizes a scaled scoring methodology to establish the minimum passing standard. A scaled score of 70 is required to pass. A standard setting method (Angoff method) is used, which involves panels of CRNI® experts determining the minimum number of correctly answered questions required to demonstrate the necessary expertise for the credential, ensuring fairness across different exam forms.

Candidates should bring their valid government-issued photo identification and their authorization-to-test email to the testing center. No reference materials, calculators, or outside devices are permitted in the testing area.

 How to Study and Exam Centers

Preparation is paramount to success on the CRNI® exam, given its complexity and the specialized knowledge it assesses. We recommend a multi-faceted study approach that emphasizes understanding over memorization.

• Study the Core Literature: The absolute most crucial resource is the Infusion Therapy Standards of Practice, published by the Infusion Nurses Society (INS). This document is the foundation of the exam. You should also study the Core Curriculum for Infusion Nursing.
• Utilize Official Resources: INS offers the CRNI® Academy, an comprehensive online learning platform designed specifically for exam prep, featuring a personalized study plan, flashcards, and practice questions.
• Practice Methods: Take numerous practice exams to familiarize yourself with the pace of the test (one minute per question) and the "best answer" format of multiple-choice nursing questions. Analyze both correct and incorrect answers to understand the rationale.

The CRNI® examination is administered internationally at secure, proctored computer-based testing centers. The primary testing vendor is PSI Services. Candidates can schedule their exam at any authorized PSI Premier PLUS® test center or authorized third-party location, giving you access to hundreds of testing sites across the United States, Canada, and internationally.

You cannot take the CRNI® exam online at home; you must attend a specific, physical testing center or authorized site. Once your application is approved, you will receive instructions on how to locate the nearest PSI center and schedule your appointment within the designated March or September window.
