What the Course Entails and Exam Details

Preparing for the CQE requires mastering the comprehensive ASQ Body of Knowledge (BoK), which is segmented into seven distinct pillars.

Your study regimen must cover Management and Leadership (Quality philosophies and code of ethics); The Quality System (Documentation, audits, and cost of quality); and Product, Process, and Service Design (Design inputs and verification).

Additionally, you will need to prove expertise in Product and Process Control (Acceptance sampling and measurement systems); Continuous Improvement (Lean tools and problem-solving); Quantitative Methods and Tools (Descriptive statistics and hypothesis testing); and Risk Management.

The final two pillars, statistics and continuous improvement, represent the most computationally intensive portions of the syllabus.

 What to Expect in the Final Exam

The actual CQE final examination is a challenging, computer-based assessment (CBT) delivered exclusively in English.

It consists of 175 multiple-choice questions, of which 160 are scored and 15 are unscored pilot questions.

You are given five hours and 18 minutes of actual exam time within a 5.5-hour appointment.

A scaled score of 550 out of a possible 750 is required to pass.

The CQE exam is notoriously open-book, meaning you are permitted to bring specified reference materials, such as the Certified Quality Engineer Handbook, into the secure testing facility.

While this allows access to formulas, the exam is primarily application-based and time-constrained, so success depends on how quickly you can locate, interpret, and apply the correct information.

The most effective study strategy involves mastering the official handbook, creating condensed formula sheets, tabbing your references for easy navigation, and simulating the full five-hour exam multiple times.

To take the final exam, you must first register with ASQ and meet the rigorous experience and education prerequisites.

Once approved, you will receive an eligibility letter directing you to schedule your sitting through ASQ's official examination partner, Prometric.

The exams are held during specific odd-month testing windows at physical Prometric testing centers worldwide or sometimes via their remote proctoring platform, ProProctor.
