Description

The Certified Quality Auditor (CQA) certification, administered by the American Society for Quality (ASQ), is the global benchmark for professionals who understand the standards and principles of auditing quality management systems.

This prestigious designation is designed for quality professionals—including internal and external auditors, compliance managers, and quality engineers—who want to formally validate their expertise in assessing the effectiveness of an organization's quality control programs.

Achieving CQA status demonstrates to employers and clients your ability to use various auditing techniques to examine, evaluate, and report on the suitability of complex quality systems.

It signals a professional commitment to continuous improvement and a mastery of the core competencies required to provide robust independent analysis of an organization’s operational health.

By focusing on risk management and business applications, the CQA elevates your role from a simple checklist monitor to a strategic partner in organizational excellence.

About this Quiz

What the Course Entails and Exam Details

Preparing for the CQA exam requires a deep understanding of the official ASQ Certified Quality Auditor Body of Knowledge (BoK).

The course covers five primary domains that define the modern quality auditing function.

I. Auditing Fundamentals (28 Questions): This section establishes the foundation, focusing on audit types, purposes, scopes, and the ethical frameworks that govern professional conduct and independence.

II. Audit Process (44 Questions): This is the heart of the exam, covering the entire audit lifecycle. You must master audit planning, preparation (creating checklists), execution (conducting interviews and meetings), reporting findings, and follow-up activities.

III. Auditor Competencies (24 Questions): This domain evaluates the necessary personal attributes and technical skills of an auditor, including communication abilities, analytical thinking, decision-making, and conflict resolution.

IV. Audit Program Management and Business Applications (32 Questions): You will learn how to manage audit resources, align the auditing function with overall organizational business strategies, and apply a risk-based approach to the auditing program.

V. Quality Tools and Techniques (22 Questions): Candidates are expected to apply various quality tools (problem-solving models, Pareto charts, control charts, and root cause analysis) to evaluate and support audit findings.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The final Certified Quality Auditor (CQA) examination is a comprehensive, open-book assessment that tests both knowledge recall and the application of complex principles through scenario-based questions.

Candidates can expect the following formal exam details:

  • Format: The standard examination is a multiple-choice exam. The computer-based version typically consists of 165 total questions (including 15 unscored pre-test questions). The paper-based version consists of 150 questions.
  • Time Limit: You are allowed 5 hours and 18 minutes for the computer-delivered exam (a 5.5-hour total appointment time), or a straight 5 hours for paper-based administration. Pacing yourself is critical.
  • Passing Score: ASQ uses a scaled scoring system. To pass the CQA exam, you must achieve a scaled score of 550 or higher on a range that goes up to 750.
  • Special Rules: The exam is open-book. You are permitted to bring bound reference materials, such as the official CQA Handbook, standard auditing texts, or your own organized notes, into the testing area. Loose papers and materials that allow rewriting during the exam are not permitted.
  • Case Studies: A significant portion of the exam, approximately 15–20% of the questions, uses case studies or detailed scenarios where you must analyze a given situation, evaluate evidence, and recommend appropriate actions.

How to Study and Exam Centers

Effective preparation for the CQA requires a structured approach that blends theoretical study with practical application.

Your study strategy should prioritize three pillars:

  • 1. Master the Body of Knowledge: Your primary resource should be the official Certified Quality Auditor Handbook. Read it thoroughly, at least once, and tab key sections, definitions, and standard references so you can locate them quickly during the open-book exam. Organize your own notes around the five BoK domains.
  • 2. Take High-Fidelity Practice Exams: Do not rely solely on passive reading. Use a high-quality, simulated CQA Practice Exam that mirrors the difficulty level, time constraints, and the blend of knowledge-based and scenario-based questions. Analyze both correct and incorrect answers to refine your reasoning.
  • 3. Leverage the Open-Book Advantage: Develop a comprehensive indexing system for your allowed materials. Since time is short, you must use your handbook primarily to verify precise details, formulas, or standards, not to learn a concept from scratch. Practice taking mock exams using only your allowed materials to build speed and confidence.

ASQ delivers the computer-based CQA exam through Prometric testing centers, which are located in major cities worldwide. After your application is approved by ASQ, you will receive an eligibility ID to schedule your exam date and location directly on the Prometric website. In specific high-demand international locations or for special arrangements, ASQ may offer traditional paper-based administrations on set dates.
