About this Quiz

What the Course Entails and Exam Details

To earn the CPHRM credential, candidates must pass a computer-based examination that tests their knowledge in five major content domains. While there isn't a single "course" that automatically awards the certification, candidates often prepare through self-study, professional development workshops, and by reviewing recommended reference materials provided by the American Society for Health Care Risk Management (ASHRM).

The exam content domains and their approximate weighting are:

Clinical/Patient Safety (25%)

  • Assess current patient safety culture and awareness.
  • Collaborate on proactive patient safety initiatives.
  • Design and implement risk management educational programs.
  • Promote a culture of patient safety within the organization.

Risk Financing (15%)

  • Manage comprehensive insurance programs, including captive management and self-insured coverages.
  • Oversee the investigation of incidents that could lead to financial loss.
  • Analyze historical loss experience and address trends.

Legal and Regulatory (20%)

  • Ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and accreditation standards.
  • Review contracts for risk-related issues.
  • Monitor changes in the legal and regulatory landscape affecting healthcare.

Health Care Operations (20%)

  • Implement an enterprise-wide risk management (ERM) program.
  • Develop and maintain disaster preparedness and business continuity plans.
  • Use data to drive risk reduction strategies.

Claims and Litigation (20%)

  • Manage claims and litigation from incident through resolution.
  • Formulate and implement claims management policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with legal counsel on defense strategies.

What to Expect in the Final Exam

The CPHRM examination is a computer-based test composed of 110 multiple-choice questions. Your score is based on 100 of these questions, while 10 are unscored "pretest" items that are interspersed throughout the exam and used for statistical purposes.

Exam Format: Multiple-choice. Time Limit: You are allowed two (2) hours to complete the examination. Passing Score: The passing score is determined using a standard-setting process (the Angoff method), which evaluates the minimum level of knowledge required. Your score report will indicate a clear "Pass" or "Fail."

You are permitted to use a silent, non-programmable calculator during the exam. Cell phone calculators are not allowed.

How to Study and Exam Centers

A successful study strategy involves a mix of formal reference review and practical application. Start by downloading the official CPHRM Candidate Handbook from the AHA Certification Center website. This handbook contains the detailed content outline, which should serve as your primary study blueprint.

Actionable Study Strategies:

  1. Review the Content Outline: Use the outline to identify your strengths and weaknesses in each domain.
  2. Study Recommended References: Focus your efforts on the reference materials listed in the candidate handbook, especially the ASHRM Health Care Risk Management Fundamentals and other specialized ASHRM publications.
  3. Take a Practice Exam: AHA offers a CPHRM Self-Assessment Exam (SAE), which is an online test that parallels the actual certification exam in format and content. This is an invaluable tool for gauging your readiness.
  4. Join a Study Group: Connect with colleagues preparing for the exam or join online forums to discuss concepts and share resources.

Exam Administration and Centers:

The CPHRM exam is administered through PSI, a leading provider of professional testing services. You can take the exam in two ways:
