For other skills, you must successfully demonstrate the "Key Steps" (critical safety steps) while maintaining the safety, dignity, and comfort of the patient/client (who is usually played by a volunteer or another candidate). Candidates are typically given 30 to 40 minutes to complete all assigned skills scenarios.

Practice verbalizing your actions (e.g., "I am now locking the bed wheels" or "I am introducing myself to the resident") to help reinforce the steps in your memory and show the evaluator you understand the safety implications.

Flashcards are invaluable for memorizing vocabulary, normal vital sign ranges, and key abbreviations. Form study groups with classmates to practice skills scenarios and quiz each other on theory.

When you are ready, your state-approved training program will usually help coordinate your registration for the exam. The official competency evaluation is conducted at various approved testing locations throughout Arizona, including many of the community colleges, private vocational schools, and specialized testing centers that host authorized vendor sites. You will receive specific information regarding your assigned testing center, date, and time during the registration process. Always bring required identification and arrive early to your testing center.
